κατέναντι adv. (JWackernagel, Hellenistica 1907, 3–6; JWaldis, Präpositionsadverbien mit d. Bedeutung ‘vor’ in d. LXX 1922; B-D-F §214, 4; Rob. 643) gener. ‘opposite’.
① marker of a position relative to someone who is viewed as having jurisdiction, whether visibly present or not, in the sight of someone, before someone, funct. as prep. w. gen. (Sir 28:26; Jdth 12:15, 19) κ. θεοῦ ἐν Χριστῷ λαλοῦμεν before God (Sir 50:19; SibOr 3, 499) 2 Cor 2:17; 12:19 (both v.l. κατενώπιον). κ. οὗ ἐπίστευσεν θεοῦ (=κ. τοῦ θεοῦ ᾧ ἐπίστευσεν, W-S. §24, 4d; B-D-F §294, 2; Rob. 717) before the God in whom he believed Ro 4:17. GJs 1:2 v.l. (for κατενώπιον).
